You don’t need a storm to occur to inspect your roof, from the ground of course. Here are 7 things you can look for:
- Leaks: Inspect your ceiling for any yellow or brown water stains. Don’t forget to also look inside your closet with a flashlight, which is a commonly missed area. Water stains on the ceiling or walls inside your home can indicate a roof leak.
- Missing or Damaged Shingles: Walk around the perimeter of your home to look for any blown shingles. Missing shingles can leave your roof vulnerable to water damage, which can cause mold or weaken your wood decking.
- Gutter Damage: Inspect your gutters for any dents, dings, or signs of weather impact like hail or wind. You can take a piece of chalk on its side and run it against your gutter to easily spot any dents or damages. Don’t worry the chalk washes right off. This is how the professionals check for gutter damage.
- Sagging: Any areas where your roof appears to be sagging can indicate structural damage and should be inspected by a professional immediately.
- Flashing Damage: Check the flashing around your chimneys, vents, pipe boots, and other roof penetrations for any missing material that may have flown off or damaged structures. Any areas exposed enable water directly to leak through your roof.
- Recent Storm: If a recent storm passed through the area, it is generally recommended to get your roof inspected. Typically, roof inspections are free of charge and provide peace of mind if you have no damage or caught a potentially material issue early.
- Neighbors: Are your neighbors getting their roof done? If they are, it may not be a bad idea to get your roof inspected too. Given that you and your neighbors suffered the same weather incidents, it is likely that your roof will have similar damage and may call for a repair or replacement.
If you notice any of these signs or are unsure about the condition of your roof, it is a great idea to contact Franco Roofing for a thorough inspection. We can assess any damage and advise you on whether repairs or a replacement is necessary. Keep in mind that even if there are no visible signs of damage to you, that does not automatically deem your roof healthy. It is still a good idea to have your roof inspected, especially, after a severe storm as some issues may not be immediately apparent.
